How to convert foreign driving licence in Singapore?

You can convert your foreign driving licence as long as you pass the Basic Theory Test (BTT), no practical test required.

It’s relatively simple to convert foreign driving licence to Singapore driving licence.

Who are eligible to convert foreign driving licence in Singapore?

First of all, you do NOT need to convert your foreign driving licence if you are a foreigner residing in Singapore for less than 12 months holding a valid foreign driving licence. You may need a International Driving Permit (IDP) in order to drive in Singapore if your foreign driving licence is not issued from ASEAN countries.

As foreigner, you are eligible to convert foreign driving licence to Singapore driving licence if you meet these 2 criteria:

  • Pass the Basic Theory Test (BTT) in Singapore; and
  • Holding a valid foreign driver licence.

You must convert your foreign driving licence to Singapore driving licence if you obtain new Singapore citizenship or permanent resident status if you wish to continue driving in Singapore.

You are required to update new status in your Singapore driving licence through a replacement application if you obtain Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident and you had previously obtained a Singapore driving licence using a Foreign Identification Number (FIN).

Steps to convert foreign driving licence in Singapore

2) Submit an application

After passing BTT, submit your foreign driving licence conversion application through Traffic Police Online Form. You will receive an auto-reply acknowledgement by email upon submission. Traffic Police will verify your eligibility for the conversion before informing you of the outcome via email within 6 weeks.

If your application is successful, you will receive an appointment to visit the Traffic Police Headquarters to verify your documents and complete the application process.

3) Attend the appointment

After receiving the appointment slot, attend the appointment to provide original supporting documents required for verification and to complete the application process at the Traffic Police Headquarters.

The required supporting documents are identification of the applicant, confirmation of valid driving licence and residency in country where the driving licence is issued. Remember to bring the original documents when you attend the appointment.
